Ideologies of globalism confront and transform nationalisms. Globalism heralds a new era of corporate globalization, and generates powerful responses. Just as classical imperialism generated anti-imperialist movements and anti-colonial nationalisms, so today's empire generates new frameworks for identification and mobilization. To what extent are the emerging agendas for emancipation non-nationalist or anti-nationalist: what is the place of nationalism in counter-globalism? The article draws on the work of Tom Nairn to analyze nationalism under globalism; drawing on a range of Australian examples, it debates the extent to which counter-globalist movements are engaged in a process of redefining and transforming nationalism; the article ends with some speculation about the ways in which nationalism and cosmopolitism are being combined.
