This chapter analyzes French and German cultures. It shows that the German culture, which is of a communitarian (collectivistic) type, is impregnated with interdependent social links, which make it less permeable to other cultures and less subject to the dominance of state strategies, while the French culture, being more authoritarian, consists of a "dependent individualism".
