Professions and knowledge-based occupations are expanding sectors of labor markets in European nation-states. Knowledge and service workers are becoming geographically mobile and knowledge and expertise are being shared and transferred between professional practitioners in Europe. Yet discussions about professions as elite occupational groups have been confined to analyses within particular states or comparisons between states. This article considers how this needs to be changed as the markets for professional services are becoming international and services are a vital component of global economies. The development of European professional federations is considered as social institutions to promote new European forms of internal self-regulation. Data from a research project currently underway at the Centre for Professions and Professional Work (CPPW) of the University of Nottingham is used to examine the range, extent and diversity of the work of professional associations at both state (UK) and European levels. The author argues that new divisions of regulatory responsibilities are emerging as well as new balances between different forms of regulation for professions and knowledge-based occupations in Europe.

For a number of years she has been researching and writing about women’s and men’s careers in teaching, banking and industrial organizations.
